How do I prepare for turbulent times when I’m still striving to escape poverty?
4–6 minutes

The temporary termination of food stamps and all nutritional programs should act as a wake-up call for struggling Americans receiving government assistance; additionally, the shutdown should encourage suffering Americans to strive harder to provide for their families on their own. Of course, there is nothing wrong with receiving help if you need it, but making government resources your primary income and relying on government resources is not ideal, especially if you desire more for yourself.

Government support should be temporary unless you are disabled or facing a life-threatening challenge that prevents you from working or attending school. If you are on welfare but not working right now, you should establish a strategy and write some goals to achieve that will boost your income and help you get out of poverty. Everyone ought to advance at their own pace, but you should make an attempt to improve your circumstances rather than simply collecting government assistance for several years with no goal of bettering yourself.

I’ve seen a lot of heated debates over the government shutdown and food stamp cuts for November; some have compassion for those less fortunate, some believe that food stamps should be eliminated permanently, and some enjoy food stamps but dislike how Americans misuse the system. To be honest, my point of view is that food stamps should never be cut since there will always be poor people among the privileged or rich.

When Jesus walked the earth, he showed compassion and helped those who were poor. The world must recognize that when good is taken away from the poor, judgment will follow. (Isaiah 10:1-3) Taxpayers must pay their debts, but the government must provide assistance to those in need. When you can afford it, buy your own.

Why do you want government support terminated permanently?
